[An email to my brother, off to Fuquay Varina to look at a riding lawnmower]
This reminded me of the "One Night in Fuquay" parody from my youth. Derived from the contemporary "One Night in Bangkok", http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9mwELXPGbA.
My memory is that the lyrics included "One night in Fuquay and the rednecks get you". But I get a grand total of three Google hits:

The part I remember goes...
One night in Fuquay makes your brain cells crumble
Drinkin' beer and wasting electricity
Watching Dukes of Hazzard on black and white TV

Back in the 1980s when “One Night in Bangkok” was a hit, a local radio station did a parody titled “One Night In Fuquay” that made fun of its small size and lack of nightlife.

Back in the 80s, a Raleigh DJ team did a parody of One Night In Bangkok called One Night In Fuquay. "I can feel a redneck walking next to me."
I wonder if that song is lost to posterity. Seems a bit of a shame.
Let's see how long it takes a google search to find this post...
ReplyDeleteTime flies, doesn't seem a minute
ReplyDeletesince Fuquay Varina had a hyphen in it.
Hey guys, don't you know, when you name a town
you use one word, not two
Not Siler City, or Spivey's Corner, or Lizard Lick, or Your Place
One night in Fuquay makes your brain cells crumble
Ain't nothing going on to do or see
There's only one way to spend an evening
Drinking beer and wasting electricity
Watching Dukes of Hazzard on black and white TV

It's not Siler City, or Spivey's Corner, or Lizard Lick, or...or Your Place.
One night in Fuquay is a redneck jungle
ain't nothing going on to do or see.
There's only one way there to spend an evening,
drinking beer and wasting electricity,
watching Dukes of Hazzard on black and white TV.
Fuquay, Carolina city, a spot on a map in a rural setting.
It's the creme de le creme of the farm world,
in a town with everything, except indoor plumbing.
One night in Fuquay makes your brain cells crumble
can't be too careful with your company.
There's only one way there to spend an evening,
drinking beer and wasting electricty,
watching Dukes of Hazzard on black and white TV.
I can feel a redneck standing next to me.
I have been searching for that song!!! I grew up in Durham!

ReplyDeleteG105 had this song. I wish I could find it too since now I live in Holly Springs, next door to Fuquay-Varina.
ReplyDeleteAlso, there was Fuquay-Varina girls as a parody of California Girls.
